"The Liberal Democrats had long supported this idea, and believed that Culverhay should be allowed to accept both sexes and give parents real choice as to where to educate their children.

"In the spring of 2010, the Conservatives chose to ignore the results of their own consultation and instead announced the closure of the school. The Liberal Democrats, though, listened to the local community, and understood that coeducation coupled with the national changes in education would provide all Bath and North East children with access to good local schools.

As a result, in the May 2011 local elections...

Culverhay Campaigners Breath Sigh of Relief

Parents and local Councillors, who have been campaigning to save Culverhay school, have welcomed news that the Council’s decision-making process has come to an end.

Councillor Dine Romero (Liberal Democrat, Southdown), who has been a leading campaigner for Culverhay to be saved and become a co-educational school, explains:

“One of the first actions of the new Lib Dem administration was to set the wheels in motion to reverse the Conservatives’ decision to close Culverhay. It has taken several months to work through the various stages of the statutory process, but the last hurdle has now been cleared.

The Liberal Democrat Cabinet revoked the closure notice on Culverhay this week on a motion moved by Cllr Hartley and seconded by Cllr Crossley. The next day we got confirmation that the secretary of state for education Michael Gove MP.
