Dear Bathwick residentThank you for downloading our February e-newsletter for Bathwick ward. This month's issue includes reports on developments with the planning application for the former MoD site on Warminster Road, plus plans for improving Sydney Gardens and a number of other local matters. If you need to discuss any of these or other concerns affecting you in Bathwick please contact David Martin on This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. MoD Warminster Road gets planning permissionThe Council's Development Control Committee has approved the planning application for 204 houses on the former MoD site at Warminster Road. The project will include two access points from Warminster Road, open spaces and landscaping, a pumping station and associated engineering works. There is also a provision of land for expansion of Bathwick St Mary Primary School, which is immediately adajcent to the site. Commenting, Cllr David Martin said "there were a number of detailed objections to the scheme from local residents and from other consultees, regarding issues such as overlooking nearby properties and the layout and design features. At the Committee meeting I expressed concerns about these issues. However, the Committee accepted the planning officer's recommendation to permit the development, which is likely to proceed fairly swiftly". Lib Dem Council allocates £250,000 for Sydney GardensA project budget of £250,000 has been allocated to improve Sydney Gardens by the Lib Dem run Council. The budget will pay for immediate improvements to the infrastructure in the park, such as the tennis courts and the play areas. Improvements will also be carried out on some of the listed structures. Work will be co-ordinated with Network Rail's electrification project to ensure maximum public benefit. Representatives from local residents' associations, the Holbourne Museum and local councillors are involved in drawing up a priority list for the works. Local campaigner Claire Jackson said "it is helpful that the Council has reached out to local community groups and residents to ask for their input. Ideas coming from the steering group are being shared more widely in a consultation leaflet. Local people care deeply about the Gardens and we have to make sure that these works have their support". Tesco store applies to open until midnightThe Tesco store on Bathwick Hill have applied to B&NES Council to change their permitted opening hours. When the shop was first granted planning permission, against the wishes of the Council, it was permitted to open for business between 8 am and 9 pm. The application seeks to vary that condition, allowing the shop to open between 6 am and midnight, every day of the week. The application can be viewed online at the Council website www.bathnes.gov.uk. Members of the public can submit comments about the application online. The planning application follows a recent licencing application for sale of alcohol between 6 am and midnight, which was withdrawn by the company. Bad weather delays bridleway work
The recent poor weather has slowed the improvements to the muddy path between Claverton Down and Combe Down. This project involves installing firmer stone foundations on a long section of open ground which had become impossible to work. Unfortunately the contractors have now reached the end of their programmed work period, and have had to start work on another project in Tunley. With the job unfinished on Claverton Down, the contractors will return in March, when hopefully the weather will be more kind.
More footpath repairsFollowing requests from your local Councillors, the footpaths on Sham Castle Lane have been repaired and new surfaces laid down. The Council is carrying out a continuing programme of footpath improvements in the city, and sections of the pavement stones on the upper part of Bathwick Hill have also recently been repaired.
Miles House Nursey gets good Ofsted ratingMiles House Day Nursery on Bathwick Hill has received a "good" rating from Ofsted after an inspection last month. The report praises the staff and management for the way in which the nursery is run. This latest inspection follows a report last year which rated the nursery "inadequate" because of a number of issues. There was no repeat of these problems in January. The good inspection result means that B&NES Council can now reinstate the Early Years Entitlement funding which had previously been withdrawn. The funding, which provides all 3 and 4 year olds with fifteen hours of nursery care per week, was delivered by the Liberal Democrats in government.
