Thank you, Ian and Ben Rossiter Rd/Widcombe Parade update Following the news last month of the financial difficulties of the main contractor for the scheme, things have got reasonably back on track. The subcontractors have been back at work, and most of the paving on the north side of the Parade is now complete. It is intended that all work will be suspended from Dec 1 for the Christmas period and will restart on Jan 5. Unfortunately all these upsets have had a knock-on effect for the eventual completion date, which is now said (worst-case) to be April. More news will follow when available. River Bank Railings As promised in previous news from Ian and Ben, the contract to provide railings along the south side of the river from the canal to Churchill Bridge has now been let, and design is in progress. It is expected that this work will be complete by the end of January. It is also believed that the Canal and River Trust will be making a contribution to the cost of this project, so the overall contribution from the Council will be less than originally planned for. Beechen Cliff improvements The first round of work to improve the Beechen Cliff area and bring in a long-overdue element of woodland management has begun, though currently suspended because the bad weather was making it impossible for the contractors' equipment to be used. Hopefully the weather will get better to allow the work to resume, to be ready for completion celebrations planned for January 11. This work is just the first phase of improvements which will be continued over the next 4 years. There is an active steering group containing residents from all affected near-by areas. If you feel you have ideas to contribute please in the first instance contact Ian. 20mph Official consultation on the areas of Widcombe ward bordering on Bathwick and Lyncombe is due to start in December. Depending on the level of support or opposition which these proposals receive, it is hoped that that an executive decision to proceed will be signed in January, with implementation to follow in Spring. Great Western Main Line Electrification Consultation continues on this scheme, with the next of the monthly drop-in sessions hosted by First Great Western and Network Rail to be held on Tuesday Dec 2, between 4.30 - 7.30pm at the Guildhall. Widcombe Junior School Fantastic news from our favourite Junior school, namely that for the second time in a row the school has been awarded a prestigious 'Outstanding' rating by Ofsted following its latest inspection held in October. At the same time the school is continuing to raise money for its 'Great Hall' project, which will significantly enlarge the hall and provide kitchen and other facilities. The school is considering how best to make this an asset available to and useful for the whole Widcombe community. If anyone reading this would like in some way to contribute to this highly supportable project please contact Ian. And lastly, the Widcombe Mummers As we all know the festive season would be less festive without an appearance by the Widcombe Mummers on New Year's Day. This year will be no exception, so for your annual dose of topical high comedy and low jokes please come along from noon on January 1st. Details of performances are on the website. We hope for better weather than last year, but in case of rain the performances will be held in St Matthews church. The event is free but a collection will be taken to support St Matthews refurbishments.
