Dear Editor,
Earlier this year, Bath and North East Somerset Council published its new Vision and Values. The revised vision statement for the authority shows that our aim is to put people first.
Throughout the decisions that we make – whether it’s how money should be spent, or what services are available to residents, we aim to create more opportunities for people to have their say. As well as increasing the number of Cabinet and Council meetings so people can come along and speak about issues of concern, present petitions or ask questions, we’ll also soon be streaming all meetings on the internet – by installing webcams in the Council Chamber and other meeting rooms.
The Cabinet is active on a regular basis. Daily we spend time visiting communities to gauge public opinion. For instance, over the last 12 months, I’ve visited all our youth centres, all 11 Childrens Centres and 36 of our local schools.
To take further our commitment to people, and in particularly those who are seldom heard or feel under-represented, the Leader of the Council has given me the remit of being the new Cabinet Member for Equalities. This is a role I’ve not taken lightly and aim to carry out with enthusiasm and commitment.
Over the last few weeks, I’ve already started work by meeting the B&NES Faith Forum, the Black Families Education Support Group, the Council’s Disability Challenge Staff Group, and have accepted an invitation to speak at Bath’s Living Springs MCC Church – which was set up over 20 years ago to offer support to gay, lesbian and transgender Christians.
My aim over the next 6 months is to visit as many BME, faith, LGBT, disability and other minority groups as possible. I’ll be listening people’s views about what matters to them, and what life is like for their particular community in Bath and North East Somerset.
Any groups who would like me to visit can contact the B&NES Cabinet Office on 01225 477038 or email

Putting people first is our challenge. Hopefully, my visits will further enable local people and the council to work together to achieve this.
Yours sincerely,
Nathan
