Welcome to Widcombe Ward, incorporating the historic Widcombe village and much of the area up to Brougham Hayes junction with Lower Bristol Road.
Widcombe Ward is close to the city centre, following the river Avon. The Kennet and Avon canal also crosses the ward. Swans abound in Widcombe!
It is made up of a number of communities, all different, all lively and all important. Apart from the spacious mostly Georgian houses climbing the slopes of Widcombe, there is, sandwiched on the edge of the river, the friendly area, known as 'The Dolmeads', the only read brick district in Bath. West of the Wells Road, most houses date from the Victorian era - ideal family homes - and closer to Westmorland, many streets project a warm community spirit. In the middle of these is the one modern estate built in the 60s: Holloway and the surrounding streets.
Widcombe has an interesting range of small specialist shops, eating-places and businesses. This all makes for a lively mixture, with Lower Oldfield Park touching the edge of the famous Morland Road shopping area.
No other ward in Bath has as many schools as Widcombe, from infants, to senior, public and private. It also has great buildings and gardens, some open to the public like the National Trust at Prior Park and others, more secret and private, opened on special days.
However, the location carries its own difficulties. The main A36 runs through the middle of Widcombe High Street and studies are now well advanced to limit traffic, thus restoring the High Street to local residents. This has been championed by the two councillors and they are working closely with the Widcombe Association, who has fought over many years to solve this problem.
Politically, Widcombe has two Liberal Democrats councillors: Cllr Peter Metcalfe and Cllr Nicole O’Flaherty. Both are active and have wide responsibilities, Peter with Transportation and Planning and Nicole covering Tourism Leisure and Culture.
They publish and deliver four times a year, with the help of volunteers,
the FOCUS Newsletter that keeps residents informed. The FOCUS allows for two-way
communication; many residents return the 'grumble sheet', thus keeping their
councillors abreast with issues which need to be tackled.
