Bath Liberal Democrats*

The Combe Down ward sits on a ridge above and about two miles to the south of Bath city centre. It is made up of an old ‘village’ area, an estate of ex-council housing at Foxhill, a small private housing development to the east and a ‘ribbon’ of development alongside the main road through Combe Down.

Combe Down is a very attractive area in which to live. There are local Primary and Secondary Schools, shops, pubs and churches within walking distance for most residents. Once on ‘the Down’ everything is on the flat. Combe Down still has flourishing rugby and cricket clubs, a village hall and community centre and a Combe Down history group has just been formed. Bus services to the area are good, with separate services every fifteen minutes to the ‘village’ and to Foxhill. In the evenings these services continue, at less frequency, funded by the local council.

The legacy of unstable abandoned stone mines, just a few metres from the surface, is now being addressed, with council and government funding, after ten years of effort from residents, local councillors, the MP and the council. A planning application for the main stabilisation scheme was submitted at the end of 2002.

The Foxhill estate was built on the old Springfield Farm in the 1950s and 1960s and the main spine of the estate - Queens Drive - was named in 1953 to mark the Queen’s coronation. The estate was built to provide affordable housing to rent, but now many houses are now in the private sector, following the ‘right to buy’ legislation of the 1980s. The rest were sold to Somer Housing Community Trust a few years ago.

The need for investment in the Foxhill community has been recognised with the opening of a new community room in the heart of the estate and the provision of ‘outreach’ youth workers.
