Clean up for Bath River Path5.16.18pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 18th Feb 2008 Over the past few months Councillors Caroline Roberts (Lib Dem, Newbridge) and Andy Furse (Lib Dem, Kingsmead) have been working with Council officers to put together a river path clean-up plan. The clean up days will be Friday 29th Feb and Saturday 1st March and activities will include litter picking, graffiti clean up, removal of debris from the river bank and the river itself between Sainsbury's and Newbridge. This is the initial stage in a project to make general improvements to the path including new signage to remind cyclists and pedestrians that it is a shared route, new benches and bins, and a lasting solution to the graffiti problem. Kingsmead and Newbridge Councillors initiated the project which it is hoped will lead to further improvements and further public consultation.
Councillor Andy Furse said, "The river path is one of the main routes that residents can take to get into the city centre, however it's an under-utilised resource and I hope that a cleaner and tidier pathway will encourage more people to use it. With spring's better weather just around the corner I hope that these improvements will get more of us using the path. I am also grateful to Tony Murphy from the Bath Boat Company who has made a boat available so that debris in the river itself can be dredged up." Councillor Roberts said, "I regularly use the river path as do many Newbridge residents, and it is important that we remove the eyesore of litter and graffiti along its route. It would be great if as many residents as possible could join us on the path between Sainsbury's and Newbridge to help with the litter picking and general tidy up - anyone who would like to help can contact us or just turn up on either day!" If you'd like to know more about how you can get involved then you can find contact details for Andy and Caroline on their Councillor pages.
