Challenge to Bath schools decision

July 26, 2010 4:54 PM

Councillor Paul CrossleyThe Liberal Democrat Group on Bath and North East Somerset Council has launched a challenge to the decision taken by the Conservative Cabinet to consult on the closure of Culverhay School in Bath.

The decision to go ahead with the closure was taken last week following a consultation process on reorganising secondary school provision in the city. The challenge is through a formal 'call in' of the Cabinet decision, which has been signed by 27 Councillors and must now be heard at an Overview and Scrutiny panel meeting within 14 working days.

Councillor Paul Crossley is the leader of the Liberal Democrat opposition Group on B&NES Council and will be the 'lead member' of the call in. Councillor Crossley said:

"Parents in Bath, particularly in the South West of the city, are feeling cheated by the decision of the Conservative Cabinet last week, which bore no relation to the consultation upon which it was supposed to be based.

"The proposal to close Culverhay was simply not on the table before. In fact the consultation showed a clear plan to reopen it as a coeducational school. It seems the Cabinet has only turned on Culverhay because other schools in Bath have taken independent actions to opt out of the reorganisation.

"With proper scrutiny, I am sure that we can get this decision brought back to the Cabinet so that parents will have a proper opportunity to comment on the decision. We hope the Cabinet will take the time to review the evidence and change their conclusion.

"Culverhay School is an essential part of the secondary school system in Bath. It serves the community fantastically and, given the chance to educate girls as well, I am confident that it can become one of the best schools in the country for the educational advances it achieves from its pupils."

If you are a resident of the Bath constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
