Liberal Democrats in Southdown are calling for the Post Office to place a counter inside the local Co-Operative Supermarket on Mount Road.
Southdown Cllrs and Bath's MP would like a new Post Office counter in Mount Road
Since the old Mount Road post office shut its doors in 2005, local shops have seen a decline in trade of up to 15%, with many residents now visiting Moorland Road to use the post office and then doing their shopping there.
The last PaCT (Partners and Communities Together) meeting saw the return of post office facilities to the area become a top priority and Councillor Paul Crossley has now written to Post Office Ltd asking for a meeting to discuss the issue.
Councillor Crossley said, "Having a counter inside another shop would minimize the costs for Post Office Ltd, but provide a vital facility for the people of Southdown. The Co-operative Society are fully on board as they, like the other shops, have noticed a significant drop in trade since the post office was closed."
Ward colleague Councillor Dine Romero added, "If residents are able to use post office facilities locally then they are much more likely to spend their money in local shops. A local post office is an important part of having a thriving local community. Residents will no longer be forced to travel by bus to visit a post office."
Bath MP Don Foster said, "We have seen several recent examples of how important the local post office is to people. During the last round of closures, where we were able to save two post offices, there was a huge groundswell of public opinion that there should be no more closures.
"More recently the temporary closure of Twerton post office showed just how much that community values the service provided. It would be excellent news if the Post Office could include a new counter in the Mount Road shops."
