Councillor Neil Butters (Liberal Democrat, Bathavon South) has expressed concern over information he has received which shows the Council's Highways Maintenance Contractor has a backlog in its repair schedule of 500 jobs.
The snow made Bath Abbey look wonderful, but has caused havoc to road repairs
Having raised the issue with Council officers, Councillor Butters was informed that the delay is due to a combination of factors including: the annual Christmas shut down of tarmac quarries during which time only emergency repairs are normally carried out; this was followed by a period when no repairs could be carried out due to the snow.
The snow and freezing weather have also caused a lot of damage to roads resulting in a huge increase in necessary repairs.
Councillor Butters commented, "It was bad luck that a combination of factors caused this massive backlog in road repairs. I have been informed that over 1000 Highway Maintenance works orders have been issued in February for potholes and road repairs.
"I have also been informed that other Council sections have ordered works from the contractors as part of the Council's programme of capital works. This is clearly a failure on the part of the Council's Cabinet properly to plan the schedule of works so as not to be affected by annual issues relating to materials availability and adverse weather.
"I will be writing to the Cabinet member responsible for Highways to seek his assurance that steps are being taken to address the situation."
