The Upper Bristol Road is to get new 30mph warning signs in a bid to cut dangerous driving on the road. Although often speeds are lower, recent traffic surveys have found that there are a significant number of motorists driving at over 50mph.
The Upper Bristol Road, although being wide, is a residential road and also has a number of pedestrian accesses to the Royal Victoria Park. Kingsmead Cllr Andy Furse (Lib Dem) has now secured extra 30mph "Check your speed" signs and has asked for a further speed survey to ascertain their effect.
Cllr Furse said, "The Upper Bristol Road is 30mph for a reason - pedestrians need to be safe. To have motorists driving at over 50mph on this road is outright dangerous, and something needs to be done. On more than one occasion cars have had to skid to a halt at pedestrian crossings.
"Residents who live along the road or who use it as pedestrians are demanding action.
"These extra signs will increase awareness of the speed limit, but a speed survey will be carried out to see if it significantly affects the speed of traffic on this road. If not, the Council will need to consider further measures.
"The Liberal Democrats' overall view of transport for the City of Bath is for safe and sensible speed limits on the main transport arteries and for 20 mph limits in residential streets to improve safety."
