Opposition Liberal Democrat Councillors in Bath and North East Somerset have branded the Conservative-Councils latest "Stop Gridlock" leaflet as nothing more than pure propaganda.
The leaflet muddles the BRT with improvements at Bath rail and bus station
The glossy publication is headed "Tired of Traffic Jams? Will you help stop gridlock in Bath and North East Somerset?" and includes details about various different schemes and projects under consideration by the Council. However Lib Dem Councillor Caroline Roberts (Newbridge) is suggesting that the leaflet will confuse many residents. Caroline explained:
"This leaflet joins together numerous different transport packages to give the impression it is a take-it-or-leave-it affair. Residents reading this leaflet could easily assume much needed improvements to Bath Spa railway station depend on the Bus Rapid Transit route going ahead.
"The simple facts are that while the bus and railway station improvements are underway, there isn't evening a planning application for the park & ride expansions. And the improved walking and cycling provisions are part of a document at its first draft stage!
"This document is little more than propaganda, designed merely to try and force a fait accompli. The Conservatives are trying to duck the real issue, which is why they still haven't considered alternative routes for the Rapid Transit scheme."
Caroline Roberts will also be asking questions at Cabinet this week about how much of taxpayers' money the Council has been spending on the various leaflets it has been putting out over the last few months.
