The Whiteway Road received a spruce-up this weekend as young offenders work with a multi-agency team to re-lay the hedges bordering the Roundhill park.

Southdown Councillors Paul Crossley and Dine Romero will be lending a hand over the course of the weekend. This work will be carried out by young offenders as part of their community service, and involves the Council's Youth Offending Team and Parks department and the Probation service.
Councillor Crossley commented, "It is really good to get young offenders out and about, helping in the community and doing work which will be of benefit to everyone. Hedges need re-laying every few years to keep them dense and healthy - the work involves cutting part-way through the tall stems and bending them horizontally, thus encouraging dense bushy growth which in turn encourages wildlife."
Councillor Romero added, "The Roundhill is a very special site which is important for wildlife such as birds, butterflies and insects. It is great that these young people are getting the chance to help improve the local environment and hopefully learn a new skill. I'm looking forward to helping out."
