Pedestrians are being put at risk by the lack of gritting or salting on pavements during the current cold snap according to Liberal Democrat Councillor Caroline Roberts who has called on the Council Cabinet to take action immediately.
Councillor Roberts (Newbridge) said, "It must have been apparent to the Council that this cold spell of weather was set to continue for a long time. Yet there has been no evidence of any gritting of pavements in my ward or indeed the main pavements into the city centre along the Upper Bristol Road.
"There is one particular section of pavement - next to the Windsor Bridge bus stop - which is thick with surface frost and another section where sheets of ice have frozen as water has drained away from the allotments.
"This is not only a hazard in particular for elderly people, many of whom now use the bus stop, but for all pedestrians in general. I have seen elderly people struggling to get to the bus shelter and mothers struggling with young children and push chairs.
"I cannot recall a year when the weather has been as cold and frosty as this without any gritting being carried out."
