Council attempting to blackmail residents into accepting BRT

December 8, 2008 9:15 AM

Liberal Democrats in Bath have criticised the Conservative-led Council as they try and blackmail residents into accepting the controversial Bus Rapid Transit scheme.

The Council has announced new measures to encourage cycling, but insist they are dependent on a green corridor in Newbridge being destroyed. Previously the Conservatives have stifled debate at Council and Cabinet, and it took a Liberal Democrat motion to see any kind of debate.

Liberal Democrat group leader Cllr Paul Crossley said, "Liberal Democrats would love to see this cycling scheme introduced in Bath , it would be a great addition to the city and would encourage sustainable transport.

"However, for the Conservatives to claim it is entirely dependent on the BRT is tantamount to blackmailing residents. Throughout the whole process the Conservative Cabinet have shown total disregard to the views of the public, and now they are trying to say that anyone opposing their route is against cycling in Bath ."

Lib Dem Cllrs have joined campaigners in protesting the BRT route

Cllr Caroline Roberts, Lib Dem spokesperson for Customer Services, said, "I am not sure the Conservatives are really interested in cycling in Bath . The cynic in me feels that this is a just another tactic to force people to accept the BRT route - a route that will not solve Bath 's transport problem.

"If they are serious about cycling, then why not encourage it amongst their staff by signing up to Cyclescheme, as Liberal Democrats suggested earlier this year? They would also do well to reveal their Green Travel Plan, which they promised some time ago."

If you are a resident of the Bath constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
