Some of the litter left behind
Over the last week Bath and North East Somerset Council has been doing one of its regular Deep Clean Keep Clean exercises in the Whiteway and Southdown estates. Much good work was achieved during the week and everyone was pleased.
However the final day turned into a nightmare for residents. A letter had been circulated by the Council, inviting residents to leave certain 'bulk items of household rubbish' at one of 9 collection points. However the Council had not prepared for the quantity of rubbish which was left on the street.
Local Councillor Dine Romero (Southdown, Liberal Democrat) said, "Knowing this letter was going out to residents, I had asked that the ward Councillors should be consulted on the content of the letter before it was circulated. I was concerned that the letter might be misunderstood and that the Council was not prepared for the amount of rubbish which would be left out for collection.
"The Council ignored our warnings that preparations should be made to collect all the rubbish left out even if it did not fall into the right 'categories' or if it took longer than scheduled. As it was, several heaps of rubbish were left behind on Saturday and Sunday inconveniencing residents and attracting trouble. One tip was set fire to on the Saturday night and had to be put out by the fire brigade."
Cllr Paul Crossley (Southdown, Liberal Democrat) added, "I was called up to Rosewarn Close and Blagdon Park on Sunday and, after seeing the state of the area, I got straight on the phone to ensure all the stops were pulled out first thing on Monday morning. I am pleased with the response from the Council's Cleansing department and Somer; all the mess has now been removed. However I believe this shows very clearly the attitude of the Cabinet member responsible. This Conservative Cabinet is happy to turn up for photo opportunities, but is failing to deliver what really matters.
More litter left behind by the Council
"I feel the residents are due a letter of apology and I have called on the Cabinet member responsible to send this out to residents as soon as possible. Dine and I are really sad that so much good work during the week was spoiled by the failure on the last day. The Conservative Cabinet must learn lessons from this."
