Don Foster MP collecting signatures at Bear Flat Post Office
The Post Office Ltd have today announced that, following the local consultation, the branches at Bear Flat and Lower Weston have been saved from possible closure. Liberal Democrats across Bath campaigned hard with local communities against these closures, and the result for these communities is spectacular.
Following the announcement at 10 a.m. today that Bear Flat Post Office in Bath will not be closed in the Post Office Network Change Programme, local Councillor David Bellotti (Liberal Democrat, Lyncombe) commented, "Bear Flat is a very busy community. I was worried that residents here would have to walk some distance or get the bus into the town centre for the services they need. But had they had to go into the city, or Moorland Road, then our local shops would have suffered."
Councillor Marian McNeir (Liberal Democrat, Lyncombe) added, "I am thrilled that the people of Bear Flat have been listened to. Around 2,000 of them signed our petition, and many came out to campaign personally during the consultation proceedings. It is great news for local residents and businesses here that the post office will remain open."
Don Foster MP with Newbridge Councillors Caroline Roberts and Loraine Brinkhurst
Following the announcement at 10 a.m. today that Lower Weston Post Office in Bath will not be closed in the Post Office Network Change Programme, local Councillor Caroline Roberts (Liberal Democrat, Newbridge) said, "I am delighted to learn that people power has been successful. Over 2,500 people signed our petition against the closure, and the Post Office has listened. The elderly and vulnerable residents of the Lower Weston area will now not have to worry about getting to the services they dearly need."
Fellow local Councillor Loraine Brinkhurst added, "There are so many local businesses here who were worried by the prospect of this branch closing. Whereas they can currently conduct their postal business very quickly, they were having to face up to the prospect of taking at least 30 minutes out of their day. One business had even moved here because there was a local post office. I am delighted that these businesses will continue to thrive in Newbridge."
