Cllr Ian Gilchrist joins local residents to campaign against the felling of the tree
Residents in Holloway, Widcombe are objecting to a planning application which aims to sell off one of the few remaining patches of green in their street so that it can be turned into hard-standing for a vehicle. They are particularly concerned that a mature tree would be felled.
Widcombe Councillor, Ian Gilchrist, has been to see the site for himself and agrees with residents that loss of the tree and green space would be a blow to the community. He said, "I have heard the arguments from residents, and can entirely see their point of view. What Holloway needs is more trees not fewer, and more grass not less. The estate is fighting against a tide of multiple occupancy (which can often mean irresponsible landlords and badly-behaved tenants), applications to split up otherwise good family homes, and now we have this. I would like to give notice of my determination to try to stem this tide. What better place to make a stand than at this tree?
"I notice that the Council has refused to make the tree the subject of a preservation order. This is a shame given its position and function"
Resident Mike Mapstone who alerted Councillor Gilchrist to the application in the first place and who has lived in the area for 22 years explains, "The tree is one of those that the developer Michael Kent was persuaded to plant with the specific aim of breaking up an otherwise rather dreary wall-scape. The tree serves its purpose very well, and we and our neighbours do not want to see it lost and replaced by yet another car parking space. Without the relief afforded by the tree, the wall behind it would look like the side of a dockside warehouse."
