Liberal Democrat Councillor Nigel Roberts has hit back at Green Party candidate Eric Lucas, who claims that the Liberal Democrats "hijacked" the campaign to Save Post Offices in Bath. Cllr Roberts was amazed by this claim, pointing out that across Bath residents had been happy to sign the Liberal Democrat petition.
Nigel's public response is below:
Dear Sir,
With regard to Eric Lucas's letter regarding the post office closures.
Two years ago the Liberal Democrats opposed that closure campaign involved a petition being delivered to Downing Street about the closure of the post office at Mount Road . The possible future closures, in this round of closure, have been part of leaflets since then, this year in February we moved a motion at Full Council, "To oppose the Post Office closure programme and respond to the consultation", Regretfully, closure of post offices has been happening over many years, under both Tory and Labour governments.
Once the closures were announced we immediately started collecting petitions opposing the closures, leafleting the areas affected, and set up an electronic e-petition. We have met with the post office to find out that they had not taken Western Riverside into account, and helped organised a public meeting organised by the council.
As part of our campaign we have collected thousands of names on petitions opposing the closures, universally residents have been happy to support the campaign. Many thank us for doing something.
If that is jumping on a band wagon that is a pretty big jump. We have done what the residents that voted for us wanted.
I didn't see Eric Lucas at that open meeting or any of his Green Party colleagues, they could have questioned the post office about the effect of the closures, as several of us did.
It is sad that Eric Lucas, and the Green Party is spending time attacking other parties rather than concentrating on the important issues that closure of post offices affects communities, especially the elderly and disadvantaged. It does nothing to reduce the carbon foot print as more people will now have to drive to their nearest post office. It is all about money, the government has taken a lot business away from the post office and now doesn't know what to do except it doesn't want to fund them.
Yours
Cllr Nigel Roberts
