Don Foster MP and Cllrs Loraine Brinkhurst and Caroline Roberts, who have been campaigning against the closure of Lower Weston Post Office
Liberal Democrat Councillors in Bath, who represent wards with Post Offices under threat of closure, have submitted responses to the Network Change programme, which is responsible for coordinating Post Office closures.
Councillors Caroline Roberts and Loraine Brinkhurst are fighting the closure of the Lower Weston Post Office in Newbridge. Their submission outlines concerns about the plans, "One of the more worrying aspects of the figures produced when putting forward this Post Office for closure is the fact that (they) have not taken into account the impact of the new Western Riverside Development. This will create in the region of 2000 new houses with a potential 4,000 more residents."
Councillors David Dixon and Colin Darracott representing Walcot ward, have objected to the proposed closure of Claremont Post Office as, "[The Post Office] is at the bottom of a very steep hill. Elderly and disabled residents are going to have a real struggle in getting back up this hill to their homes. Surely it is these people that rely the most on the services that the Post Office provides?!"
Councillors Marian McNeir and David Bellotti represent Lyncombe where the Bear Flat Post Office is situated. In her response to the consultation, Cllr McNeir said, "The Post Office is used constantly and therefore brings business to other local shops - something both the Government and Bath & North East Somerset have said they wish to support and encourage. It would seem ironic for the catalyst for local shops to be removed and local businesses have expressed their concern forcibly. The economic stability of Bear Flat as a thriving local community would be put in danger."
