Lib Dems help get young people active in sport

September 9, 2004 6:25 PM

Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Sport, Cllr Nicole O'Flaherty, has launched a unique project to encourage young people to develop their leadership abilities within local sports associations.

The 'Step Into Sport programme', allows young people aged 14-19, from schools and colleges across Bath & North East Somerset to work in a range of job roles within community sports organisations such as rugby, football or hockey clubs.

Cllr Nicole O'Flaherty, Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Sport, says:

"This is a unique project which will allow young people to get involved with sports clubs at the managing and organisation side. This will also help our local sporting clubs who will benefit from the enthusiasm and fresh ideas that young people will bring with them.

"When Liberal Democrat Councillors first initiated this scheme we hoped that we would be able to encourage young people to get involved with running their local sports clubs. But you never know perhaps we may find the next Sir Clive Woodward!"

It is a joint venture between several bodies including Sport England and is funded through the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the Department for Education and Skills.

The scheme is already up and running at Oldfield School in Bath. Whilst in placements the volunteers will work with fund-raisers, public relations officers, umpires and coaches.

If you are a resident of the Bath constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
